Facts About Marble Restoration

Marbles are formed from limestone that has undergone a through the process of recrystallization via heat or pressure. This metamorphic rock is composed of dense crystalline structure transformed into the total polished surface. Its variable array of colors is transformed from creams & whites in classical sculpture to browns, grays, greens, pinks and yellows due to the impurities of mineral in the original limestone. However, its beauty does not last as continues wear and tear make marble become dull, stained, chipped and scratched. For this reason, marble restoration is an important part of maintaining its beauty and quality.
Marble floors and marble countertops are great challenges to owners as they become dull and unimpressive over time. However, restoring the luster that was once there is not tedious and does not need expensive tools or training.

Restoring marbles include: cleaning, repair, honing, polishing and sealing.

  1. Cleaning marbles on a regular basis is an important part of the restoration. Use warm water and a fresh soft cloth to remove normal stains of coffee, tea and dust. Not all natural stones are equal for each one has different cleaning procedures. Paint thinners, turpentine oils and vinegar are good stain remover; acetone, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide remove stains from butter, meat, oil and wine; and non-fat detergents eliminate smoke and soot stains.
  2. Repair An important aspect of restoring marbles is repaired. This means that damaged surfaces of marble tile must be repaired by using an oscillating handheld tool with a blade to remove grout and the damaged piece of tile. The damaged tile can be replaced with a new one. Cracks in marble surfaces are repaired with a marble repair compound bought from local home improvement center or marble dealer. If repair is too much or involves complete resurfacing, hire a professional service.
  3. Honing is a part of the repair and part polishing. Use abrasive pads or stones attached to a handheld oscillating tool to perform honing. An even finish is a result which is not as glossy as with polishing.
  4. Polishing gives luster after you clean, repair, and hone marbles. Apply a marble stripper by first rinsing the marble surface two times with clean water and allow it to dry completely. If this is a DIY job for you, rent a floor buffer for marble floors and apply the polish in 3-by-3-foot sections with a side-to-side motion. A small rotary buffer or car buffer will get the job done for other marble surfaces. Three applications are required to achieve a high and even gloss.
  5. Sealing is essential in restoration as kitchen and bathroom countertops are often in contact with acidic or greasy substances. Sealing is probably the best way option to protect them from these substances. Yearly, apply stone sealants to seal pores in the marble and safeguard the surface from damage.

With a little time and effort, you can put that impressive shine back onto the surface of your marble floor or countertop. Marble restoration is economical and you can make old marble look new again. If you want to have the restoration job done by a professional, you can contact a marble restoration service and watch your marble restored to its original classic look.
